Employment Conditions

Employment conditions vary according to the type of vacancy that has been filled. There are three types:

Internationally recruited staff
Locally recruited staff in Rome
Locally recruited staff in regional locations

Internationally recruited staff
Contractual Term of Employment
An initial three year contract is normally offered which is renewable subject to satisfactory performance and continuing funding. The first 12 months of the appointment will be served as a probationary period.

Salary
International staff receive a competitive salary in US dollars. There are five grade levels of international staff (ranging from the lowest which is grade 5, to the highest which is grade 1).

A purchasing power adjustment allowance is applied to the salary and is adjusted every month to offset exchange rate fluctuations against the US dollar.

Housing allowance
A monthly housing allowance is provided to assist with the cost of local accommodation. The amount of the allowance varies according to duty station and the number of dependent family members.

Education allowance
An education allowance of 75 percent of the authorized costs of designated schools at the relevant duty station is provided for children up to the end of secondary level.

Retirement fund contribution
A monthly contribution will be made by the Organization to a retirement fund. The amount of the contribution is calculated as a percentage of base salary which varies depending on age as outlined in the table below:

Home leave travel
The Organization will pay for the cost of travel for the staff member and eligible dependents to the home country once each year.

Insurances
Medical insurance coverage is provided to the staff member and eligible dependents. Life insurance, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and long term disability insurance will be provided to the staff member only.

Leave

  • 30 days of vacation leave per year
  • 22 sick leave days per year.
  • 16 weeks maternity leave
  • 5 days paternity leave
  • 5 days adoption leave
  • 3 days compassionate leave

Separation benefit
When the staff member separates from Bioversity they will receive a payment equivalent to one month’s base salary for each year of service up to a maximum of six months.

Travel and relocation costs
When the new staff member is appointed and moves to the duty station, the following is paid: shipment allowance (IPGRI pays the cost of the shipment of personal effects within an established volume/weight), relocation allowance (USD 4,000 for the staff member and additional USD1,000 for each dependent joining at the duty station), and temporary living expenses (per diem is paid for up to one month under very specific conditions).

Locally recruited staff in Rome
Contractual Term of Employment
An initial three year contract is normally offered which is renewable subject to satisfactory performance and continuing funding. Depending on the level of the position between 6 to 12 months of the appointment will be served as a probationary period.

Salary Ranges
Local staff receive a competitive salary paid in euros. There are five grade levels of locally-recruited staff (ranging from the lowest which is grade 5, to the highest which is grade 1), which encompasses positions at both professional and support levels.

Retirement fund contribution
A monthly contribution of 15.8 percent of base salary will be made by the Organization to a retirement fund.

Insurances
Medical insurance coverage will be provided to the staff member and eligible dependents. Life insurance, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and long term disability insurance will be provided to the staff member only.

Child allowance
An allowance of 1,069 euros will be paid per year for each child recognized as a dependent.

Separation allowance
When the staff member separates from Bioversity they will receive a payment calculated on the base salary at the time of separation divided by 13.5 and multiplied by the number of completed years of service.

Locally recruited staff in regional locations
For local staff outside headquarters, Bioversity offers a competitive remuneration and benefits package that varies according to the location of the duty station that the position is based in. nformation on the general conditions of the package offered can be provided by the relevant office at each location.
