A Regional Policy Advocacy Workshop

Commission UEMOA (WAEMU)
Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso
5-6 Sept 2007

This workshop was born from the growing recognition worldwide that for people to have good Nutrition and Health, the Agricultural and Health Sectors need to sit down together and develop a common policy.

The participants hailed from all professional backgrounds and were chosen as key people capable of making a difference in addressing malnutrition in the ECOWAS area. They included representatives from th e private sector, the research community, the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), Helen Keller International (HKI), the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), local nutrition focal points, the secretariat for Agriculture at ECOWAS and Directors of Health and of Agriculture from the respective ministries.

During the two days the groups analysed current strengths and weaknesses in current cross-sectoral collaborations, and developed strategy objectives for the ECOWAS region and action plans for achieving them on a regional and national level.

The meeting was organised by Bioversity International and the West African Health Organisation in technical cooperation with FAO. It was supported by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), IDRC (International Development Research Centre), the Global Facilitation Unit for Underutilized Species (GFU) and the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU).
