Luxembourg Workshop
The colourful city of Luxembourg played host to the Second European Workshop on National Plant Genetic Resources Programmes: from research to policy making, held in November 2006.
About 100 experts from almost all European countries representing the plant genetic resources (PGR) community, including scientists, researchers, policy makers and others gathered to exchange information and experience with building National Programmes (NPs).The main issues discussed during the Luxembourg Workshop included research perspectives and opportunities on PGR in Europe, identification of NPs as an essential platform for development and implementation of policies and laws in each country, the future role of stakeholders in conservation and the use of PGR in Europe and the importance of the collaborative networking.
The First European workshop on NPs, known as the “Alnarp Workshop”, was held in April 2003. The progress made since then was summarized on the basis of the results of a survey of NPs conducted between the two workshops. While highlighting the progress made in building NPs in the European Region during recent years, the survey acknowledged the continued need for a platform to assist NPs through enabling exchange of experience and mutual learning.
The workshop facilitated a creative discussion. Many good ideas and proposals for further action were developed and were summarized in the Report. Participants showed a strong interest in further development of collaboration and indicated the need for further existence of relevant platform for European National Programmes.
