1 billion hungry people

Bioversity International is proud to support the One Billion Hungry Campaign launched by FAO with the aim of “calling upon governments to make their top priority the elimination of hunger”.

According to latest FAO statistics almost one billion people (925 million) in the world suffer from chronic hunger. At the same time there are 2 billion people, mainly women and children, who suffer from malnutrition - a lack of essential micronutrients that can seriously affect health, life expectancy and child growth.

Current approaches to the problems of malnutrition are clearly not working. It is time for a fresh set of solutions, based on using agricultural biodiversity as a component of healthy diets and resilient food systems that can guarantee true nutritional security.
