Bioversity International Celebrates World Food Day – October 16th 2012

World Food Day raises awareness and understanding of approaches to ending hunger. Bioversity International will take part in several events to celebrate World Food Day 2012 including participating in the Committee on World Food Security meeting and exhibition which will be hosted at the UN Food and Agriculture Organization in Rome, Italy during the week 15-19th October:

Feed the Land, Cultivate the Future – International Conference on food security, feeding habits and nutrition.
15th October, 09:00-20:00

A one-day conference in Rome will mark the Italian celebrations of World Food Day. Bioversity International Director General, Emile Frison, will be speaking in the session ‘Famine and drought, opulence and consumerism: The earth is seeking balance’.

Cities, Nutrition and Sustainable Diets.
15th October, 13:30-14:30

The UN Food and Agriculture Organization’s ‘Food for the Cities’ is a multidisciplinary initiative to help alleviate food insecurity and malnutrition in urban areas. Bioversity International, Programme Leader, Nutrition and Marketing of Diversity, Bruce Cogill, will be speaking at this event.

CFS Side Event – Sustainable Diets for Food and Nutrition Security.
18th October, 08:30-09:30

Sustainable diets are a useful entry point to address sustainable solutions to food and nutrition security, and related concerns of biodiversity, resilience to climate change, social equity, cultural, and human and environmental health. This event will inform the Committee on World Food Security’s participants on on-going work in this area and launch a debate on its relevance to the Committee’s work. Bioversity International Director General, Emile Frison, will co-chair this event.

CFS Side Event – Whole Landscape Approaches to Achieve Food Security in the Face of Climate Change.
18th October, 18:00 – 19:00

Recommendations to the Committee on World Food Security to strengthen food security outcomes of landscape initiatives and to incorporate landscape management into food security policy.

Hunger Run 2012.
21st October, 10:00

Runners will be back in the streets of Rome’s historic centre on Sunday 21 October 2012, for Hunger Run 2012. Thousands of competitive and amateur runners are expected to participate in this popular 10K and 5K fund-raiser. Proceeds from registration fees this year will go towards a joint FAO, IFAD, WFP and Bioversity International project help poor communities in Kenya affected by drought and poor harvest.
