Descriptor Lists, such as the one for wild and cultivated rice, help standardise crop information.

Effective sharing of information about genetic resources depends on everyone using the same “dictionary”.

Descriptor lists, published by Bioversity and its partners, provide this common language, standardising the way we document plant genetic resources, enabling us to share the information more easily.

This impact assessment study looks at ways in which Bioversity's descriptor lists have contributed to the development of genebank databases, increased their ability to work with partners, improved efficiency in collection management and facilitated data exchange.

90% of respondents to a survey conducted as part of the assessment felt that the descriptor lists had not only provided a useful contribution in these areas, but that they rated them more highly than those from other sources.

The most common constraint given to using the lists was a lack of descriptors for a particular species of interest - highlighting the need for Bioversity to develop additional ones.

Why should Bioversity develop descriptors for every species on Earth? There's nothing to stop people who really need descriptors from developing their own, following the very detailed guidelines which have been published by...Bioversity.

Thanks Luigi. We indeed do encourage other organizations to develop their own descriptor lists, asking them to contact us for any help or guidance. In this way we are available to work with them to help ensure their descriptors are widely accepted.
