Privacy policy & cookies

Bioversity International (also known as IPGRI)
(effective as of December 19th 2012)

Bioversity International is committed to protecting your personal information. Your privacy on the Internet is of utmost importance to us and we want to ensure that our services are safe for everyone.

This Policy aims to help you understand what information we might collect about you and how we use it. This Privacy Policy applies to all Bioversity International sites - that is all sites within the "Bioversity International.org" domain name (the “Site”).

1. Information Bioversity International may collect about you

Personally Identifiable Information

You are not asked to provide any personally identifiable information to access the Site. However you may be asked to provide your name, address, email address, telephone number, and, where appropriate, dates of birth to subscribe to email alerts or newsletters. In this event, Bioversity International will store this information securely and will not share, rent or sell it to anyone other. See section 7 for the use of information related to online donations.
Non-personally identifiable information

In general, you can browse the Bioversity International Site without telling us who you are or revealing any personal information about yourself. The only information we gather during general browsing is from standard server logs: these include your Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, domain name, browser type, operating system, and information such as the web site that referred you to us, the files you download, the pages you visit, and the dates/times of those visits. These will not specifically identify you. The information will be used internally only for web site traffic analysis and is treated confidentially.

For clarification an IP Address is a numerical label assigned to your computer so that when your web browser or email application requests a webpage or email from another computer it automatically gives that computer the address where it should send the information.

2. Uses BIOVERSITY INTERNATIONAL will make of your information

We will use your information to:

give you the products, information or services you have requested
keep you in touch with our work by sending you updates, fundraising and marketing communications
send you administration information about our charitable aims
comply with financial regulations and the law

To do some of this, we may need to share your information with third parties such as our regional offices, service providers, associated organizations, and agents. However, we will only share your information for marketing purposes if you have already given us permission.

You can opt out of receiving donation appeal letters, emails or telephone calls from us at any time by contacting us in the way indicated at section 9.

3. How we protect your personal information

We take appropriate physical, electronic, and managerial measures to ensure that we keep your information secure, accurate and up to date, and that we only keep it as long as is reasonable and necessary.

We take all necessary measures to protect personal information and any credit card details we may receive on our website are passed securely through PayPal, our payment processing partner provider, according to the Payment Card Industry Security Standards. Bioversity International encourages the public though to send their contributions via cheque.

4. Sharing your information with others

Bioversity International will keep your information confidential except where disclosure is required or permitted by law (for example to government bodies and law enforcement agencies) or as described in section 5 below.
Generally, Bioversity International will only use your information within Bioversity International.

However, sometimes Bioversity International may use third parties to process your information on our behalf. Bioversity International requires these third parties to comply strictly with its instructions and that they do not use your personal information for their own business purposes, unless you have explicitly consented to the use of your personal information in this way.

5. Offensive or inappropriate content on Bioversity International Site

If you post or send offensive, inappropriate or objectionable content anywhere on or to Bioversity International websites or otherwise engage in any disruptive behaviour on any Bioversity International service, Bioversity International may use your personal information to stop such behaviour.

Where Bioversity International reasonably believes that you are or may be in breach of any applicable laws (e.g. because content you have posted may be defamatory), Bioversity  International may use your personal information to inform relevant third parties such as your employer, school email/internet provider or law enforcement agencies about the content and your behaviour.

6. Cookies

What is a Cookie?

A cookie is a piece of data stored on your hard drive containing information about you. Usage of a cookie is in no way linked to any personally identifiable information while on the site. By setting a cookie, Bioversity International will remember you the next time you visit the Site and therefore Bioversity International will not have to ask questions that you have already answered (like address information).

Uses of Cookies

You are always free to decline our cookies if your browser permits, although in that case you may not be able to use certain features on the Site and may be required to re-enter information more frequently to use certain services on the Site.

Third Party Cookies

Please note that during your visits to Bioversity International websites you may notice some cookies that are not related to Bioversity International or Bioversity International’s contractors. When you visit a page with content embedded from, for example, YouTube or Flickr, you may be presented with cookies from these websites. In order for these cookies to operate you need to opt-in and select their use. Please note though that disabling these cookies will break the functions offered by these third parties.

Opting-out – Turning Cookies off

If you don’t want to receive certain categories of cookies on the Bioversity International Site, you can usually switch cookies off by adjusting your browser settings to stop it from accepting cookies. By doing so, however, you will likely limit the functionality of our Site and a large proportion of third parties websites as cookies are a standard part of most websites.

It may be that you have concerns around cookies related to so called 'spyware'. Rather than switching off cookies in your browser you may find that anti-spyware software achieves the same objective by automatically deleting cookies considered to be invasive.

7. Donations to Bioversity International

Bioversity International requests information from you on its online donation form. Here you must provide contact information (like name and address) and financial information (like credit card number, expiration date). This information is used to conduct the transaction and help us better manage donors. If we have trouble processing a donation, this information is also used to contact you. Bioversity International will store this information securely and will not share it, rent or sell it to anyone other than Bioversity International partner organizations, like regional offices. Even though our donation page does not require cookies, the payment system Bioversity International uses does.

8. Notification of Changes

If Bioversity International decides to change this Privacy Policy, Bioversity International will post those changes to this page so that you are always aware of what information we collect and how we use it.
