Steps towards implementing the International Treaty in Peru

Bioversity has just published a study that details the implications for Peru’s participation in the Multilateral System of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture

The paper, (4.4 MB) available in Spanish, was published on behalf of the CGIAR System-wide Genetic Resources Programme (SGRP). It examines the exchange and use of plant genetic resources in Peru and identifies opportunities that may result from the exchange of its genetic resources with other countries.

Under the Treaty’s Multilateral System of Access and Benefit Sharing, Peru will be able to readily acquire the genetic resources it needs to improve its food security. This is particularly important for those non-native crops, such as asparagus, that form an important part of its agricultural production and foster its economic development. But success will depend on strengthening the national system through which its plant genetic resources are maintained and used.

The study is part of a project: ‘Collective Action for the Rehabilitation of Global Public Goods’ carried out through the SGRP and supported by the World Bank.  A summary will be available in English in a few months time.
