Semantics for Biodiversity – International Workshop

Semantic Web standards, tools, ontologies and related technologies have considerably matured in recent years. The access to a wide catalogue of biological, social, environmental and ecological data sources that can support biodiversity stakeholders to resolve complex questions is wider than ever before.
The 1st international workshop on Web Semantics for Biodiversity, S4Biodiv2013, will be held on May 27th in Montpellier, France, to define key challenges identified by the bioinformatics community, discuss solutions and identify opportunities emerging from interactions across plant science and informatics disciplines. Bioinformatics experts at the workshop will explain how they are applying web semantic standards and tools to their scientific area of expertise – including biology, agroecology, genomics, environment, social sciences and citizen sciences.
A key focus of the workshop will be the use of semantic technologies to design and develop systems that support research on agricultural and wild biodiversity conservation and management for food security including strategies for resilience to climate change pressure, ecosystem monitoring and territory mapping.
The workshop is co-organized by Bioversity International, Institut de Recherche pour le Development (IRD), Centre de Recherche Agronomique pour le development (CIRAD), Institut de Biologie Computationelle (IBC) and Université de Montpellier II.
The programme is composed of two keynotes and presentations from an international scientific community from Australia, Finland, France, Thailand, South Africa, Spain and the United States of America.
Live webcast will be available here.
The workshop will be held within the 10th Extended Semantic Web Conference (ESWC) on the Semantics and Big Data event, in Montpellier, May 26 – 30th. Follow updates on Twitter: #eswc2013
