BEAF/GIZ Sponsored Internship

Country: Estonia | Year: 2010

Research Title: Developing a Carbon Footprint Policy for Bioversity International

A lot of input and ideas were gathered with colleagues who also helped to work out the concrete proposals for reducing Bioversity's impact on the environment. During my internship, I mastered my knowledge about an organization's impact on the environment, how to quantify it and how to reduce it. It was an exciting challenge.

Eveli Soode has a strong interest in policy and environmental management. She holds an MSc in Sustainable Resource Management, where she specialized in sustainable agriculture, land use, and carbon capture & sequestration. She has worked for the Estonia Ministry of Defence and speaks Estonian, English, German, Russian and Finnish.

Eveli spent 6 months at Bioversity International’s headquarters in Rome, helping the organization develop a Carbon Footprint Policy. This involved calculating the carbon emissions of Bioversity’s headquarters and its regional offices, as well as setting a baseline year to set future targets by.

Brainstorming workshops and meetings were carried out with Bioversity staff to come up with practical solutions to reducing the organization’s footprint. Options for offsetting emissions, setting reduction targets, and an annual cycle of activities, including coordinating the calculation of Bioversity’s carbon footprint were also discussed. The internship resulted in a Climate Neutral Policy which is currently being implemented at Bioversity.

Eveli is currently doing her PhD on “The Carbon Footprint of Gardening Products” at the Technical University Münich.
