Up to date 18 countries provided clones. Other
are expected to join the core collection from the whole distribution
range (the species is reported to be autochthonous in 33
european countries). 39 clones are now available in propagation in
the Network’s core collection hosted by the Poplar Research
Institute (ISP) in Casale Monferrato; a duplicate (not complete, 32
clones were propagated in 1999) is maintained at the Institute for
Forestry and Nature Research (IBN/DLO) in Wageningen. Part of the
collection is hosted both by INRA and IBW Institutes because some of
the clones were sent for molecular and isozyme analysis (EUROPOP
project).
Conditions for the exchange of cuttings are
given below:
Period of collection and deadline for
shipment
Although the cuttings can be collected during
the entire winter period, we recommend collecting them in January or
at the beginning of February (depending on the location of
collection site)and sending them as soon as possible (after the
pre-treatment as specified below) in order to send them in a colder
period in order to reduce potential damage to the cuttings during
transport
Size and quality of the cuttings
The best cuttings are those collected from
stool-beds and in particular those obtained from the lower part of
the one-year old stool. Size: in order to ensure a good survival, it
is advisable to use longer than normal cuttings (about 30 cm long)
and about 1.5-2 cm in diameter. It is also possible to collect
vegetative material form a nursery taking cuttings from one-year old
lateral (proleptic) branches of at least 1.5 cm in diameter. If only
adult trees are available, it will be better to collect cuttings
from the epicormic shoots (one-year old) that are frequently present
along the trunk. Again, longer cuttings are preferable.
Number of cuttings
We suggest at least 25 cuttings per clone; in
case of poor cuttings, increase the number.
Treatment of the material before shipping
We recommend hydrating the cuttings for 24
hours in cold water. A good way to prevent dehydration during
shipment is to cover the extremities with grafting wax.
Packing
In order to reduce dehydration put the
cuttings, treated as described above, in a plastic bag. Use
different bags for different clones.
Means of transport
We suggest to use fast delivery mail whenever
possible.
