New project on forest genetic resources

A new project on forest genetic resources (FGR), i.e. ‘Establishment of a European Information System on Forest Genetic Resources (EUFGIS)’ was launched on 1 April 2007 for a period 3.5 years. The project is funded by the European Commission under the Community programme on the conservation, characterisation, collection and utilisation of genetic resources in agriculture, established by Council Regulation No EC 870/2004. Climate change and forest genetic diversity: Implications for sustainable forest management in Europe
Paris, France, 15-16 March 2006

Summary report

Climate change is predicted to increase average temperatures by 2–4°C in Europe over the next 50 years and cause considerable changes in regional and seasonal patterns of precipitation. This will alter the environmental conditions to which forest trees in Europe are adapted and create additional challenges for forest management, with consequent impacts on the economic and social benefits derived from forests. First meeting of the Forest Management Network

The Research Institute for Forest Ecology and Forestry Rhineland-Palatinate hosted the first meeting of the EUFORGEN Forest Management Network in Lambrecht (Pfalz), Germany on 3-5 November 2005.  Representatives from 22 countries discussed the role of gene conservation as part of sustainable forest management and how genetic issues are taken into account in management practices at national level. The meeting also discussed the objectives of Phase III and developed a workplan for the Forest Management Network. Click here to read more

Ash for the future: defining European ash populations for conservation and regeneration

FRAXIGEN, a research project funded under the EU 5th framework programme, has been underway for the last three years in six European countries to improve our understanding of the genetic resources of the three principal native Fraxinus species of Europe: F. excelsior, F. angustifolia and F. ornus. The FRAXIGEN project (EU contract no. EVK2-CT-2001-00108) has ten partners in Greece, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom carrying out parallel studies on the three species in different areas of their natural distribution. Science and the MCPFE process

On 13 October 2004, a preparatory workshop analyzed these gaps and discussed the past and future of the science-policy interface in Warsaw, Poland. The workshop was hosted by the Polish Forest Research Institute and organized by the European Forest Institute (EFI), in collaboration with the International Institute for Applied System Analysis (IIASA), the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO), IPGRI and the United Nations University (UNU). click here to read more

MCPFE Expert Level meeting 2004

EUFORGEN Phase III (2005-2009) endorsed

National Coordinators and Focal Persons from 30 countries participated in the fourth Steering Committee meeting of the European Forest Genetic Resources Programme (EUFORGEN), held in Židlochovice, Czech Republic on 26–29 May 2004. During a first-day seminar, representatives from the European Commission’s Directorate General for Agriculture, the Liaison Unit Warsaw of the Ministerial Conference on the Protection of Forests in Europe (MCPFE), the European Forest Institute (EFI) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) addressed forest biological diversity and sustainable forest management in Europe. International Treaty enters into force on 29 June 2004

On 31 March 2004, the number of countries ratified the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture increased to 48, exceeding the required number of instruments (40) for the Treaty to enter into force. Subsequently, the Treaty will now enter into force after 90 days, i.e. on 29 June 2004. The Treaty was approved by the FAO Conference in November 2001 to conserve and sustainably use of plant genetic resources and to ensure the fair and equitable sharing of benefits derived from their use. MCPFE Expert Level Meeting, Vienna, Austria, 16-17 October 2003

The Liaison Unit of the Ministerial Conference on the Protection of Forests in Europe (MCPFE) is organizing an Expert Level Meeting to initiate the follow-up work of the Vienna Ministerial Conference, held in April 2003. The aim of the meeting is to start the development of a work programme for the implementation of the commitments made during the Vienna Conference and the reinforced implementation of previous commitments. EUFORGEN, implementing Resolution 2 (Conservation of forest genetic resources) of the Strasbourg Ministerial Conference (1990), will be represented by the Secretariat in the forthcoming Expert Level Meeting ( www.mcpfe.org  for more information).

Asia Pacific Forest Genetic Resources Programme initiated

Representatives from twelve countries participated in the Inception Workshop of the Asia Pacific Forest Genetic Resources Programme (APFORGEN), Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 15-18 July 2003. The participating countries included Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Cambodia, Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia and Lao PDR while China only submitted a country report. The workshop was organized by the Asia Pacific Association of Forestry Research Institutions (APAFRI) and IPGRI in technical collaboration with FAO. EUFORGEN Coordinator also participated in the workshop and provided European experiences on regional collaboration on forest genetic resources. The countries expressed their interest to develop close collaboration between APFORGEN and EUFORGEN. The summary of the workshop and further details are available from Hong L.T.
