Bioversity International has been at the forefront of global scientific efforts to research  [1] and demonstrate the vital role of biodiversity in farming and forest systems for more than 35 years.

The current global challenges for agriculture are immense, with growing threats to food security and the sustainability of production systems.

If agriculture is to rise to the current challenges facing the global community, we believe that agricultural biodiversity needs to be conserved, and it needs to be used; and it is these two overriding and interlinked requirements that will guide our work for the coming decade.

We will focus on the need to increase investment in diverse and resilient agriculture to help lift smallholder communities in developing countries out of poverty.  And to do so without destroying the biodiversity on which life on Earth depends.

Vision

Bioversity International’s vision is of a world in which smallholder farming communities in developing countries are thriving and sustainable.

Purpose

Given that agricultural biodiversity is a key asset to achieve this vision, Bioversity International’s purpose is to investigate and promote the use and conservation of agricultural biodiversity in order to achieve better nutrition, improve smallholders’ livelihoods and enhance agricultural sustainability.
