2011 is the International Year of Forests,  [2] a year to celebrate the importance of forests and trees and the role they play in people’s lives.

A highlight of the celebrations is the International Day of Biodiversity  [3], held on May 22nd, which this year will celebrate forest biodiversity and raise awareness about conservation and sustainable development of all types of forests.

Welcoming this year’s theme, Emile Frison, Director General of Bioversity, said:

“Bioversity International is proud to celebrate the importance of forests for people during the International Year of Forests and Biodiversity. Our research aims to help people conserve valuable forest biodiversity, including genetic diversity, for use today and for future generations. We welcome the attention that the UN brings this year to the very important issues at the interface of people and forests.”

Bioversity is joining in with the celebrations by bringing you a week of forest and tree stories starting on Monday - so keep checking the website. And here is a message  [4] from the Secretary General of the United Nations.

In the meantime, read more about our work with forests and trees  [5].
