The University of Sydney has honoured Bioversity scientist, Dr. Danny Hunter, with the Alumni Award for Outstanding International Achievement. This award recognizes the impact of his research in rural development, sustainable agriculture and the conservation of agricultural biodiversity for future food security.
Since graduating in 1991, Hunter's research has focused on the alleviation of rural poverty and natural resource degradation,and he remains passionate about the importance of improving farmer livelihoods and community development.
His work has taken him to more than 30 countries and has seen him lead three international projects with generated considerable technological and socio-economic impact.
One of these, the Taro Genetic Resources Conservation and Utilization project, resulted in securing this important staple in Samoa, following a devastating outbreak of taro blight. “Now, taro diversity in the Pacific region is safely conserved for future generations and we are continuing to bring global expertise to other countries” Hunter commented.
Dr. Danny Hunter is currently working with Bioversity on a project ‘Mainstreaming biodiversity conservation and sustainable use for improved human nutrition and well-being’ in Brazil, Kenya and Turkey.
