Bioversity International took part at the 11th European Nutrition Conference  [2] held last week in Madrid. The conference which takes place every four years, is organized by FENS - a non-profit federation consisting of 25 European nutrition societies, each representing one country.

Bioversity in collaboration with FAO organized a side event entitled ‘Sustainable Diets and Biodiversity’ during which Federico Mattei, Bioversity Programme Specialist on Nutrition and Biodiversity, gave a presentation: "The role of agricultural biodiversity in diets in the developing world: Improving diet diversity, quality and ecosystem sustainability"  [3]

A panel then discussed the role of sustainable diets in developing countries and the need to initiate a paradigm shift and review the current food production system. Recommendations were made to the international nutritionist community to include the concept of sustainability of diets in future development efforts highlighting the need to focus on diets that are sustainable nutritionally, environmentally and socially.
