The International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture

Bioversity International plays an important role in the implementation of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture  [1].

The Treaty, in harmony with the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD  [2]), provides for the conservation and sustainable use of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture (PGRFA), as the basis for food security.

The Treaty has implemented a multilateral system of access and benefit sharing, among those countries that ratify the Treaty, for a list of 64 of the most important food and forage crops essential for food security and interdependence.

Bioversity is a joint partner with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO  [3]) and the Treaty Secretariat to assist countries, such as Peru, the Philippines and Kenya, build their capacity to implement the Treaty with particular reference to the multilateral system of access and benefit-sharing.
