Objective 4: To mainstream the role of agricultural biodiversity into public health and nutrition policy and practice by sharing evidence and providing local solutions

Through Bioversity International's research programme  [1], we will contribute to international efforts to address global food concerns such as the response to soaring food prices across the globe, food sovereignty, the effect of globalization of diets on health and the need to promote the effective conservation and utilization of this globally significant resource.

Through the establishment of cross-sectoral policy platforms to promote the mainstreaming of biodiversity, the programme will create synergies with relevant global initiatives and will provide linkages with national programmes and policy frameworks.

Bioversity International’s gathered evidence will be shared with partners, governments and organizations for mainstreaming and integration into larger public health and agriculture policy forums and large-scale programming.

In this component, Bioversity International will:

  • strengthen international development initiatives incorporating agriculture biodiversity-linked food system approaches in food and nutrition security, global health and social protection policies and programmes
  • promote agriculture biodiversity conservation and its role in improving nutrition security in national nutrition and agriculture plans and policies

It will be essential to advocate the importance of biodiversity on healthy diets and to educate the scientific community, the general public, and practitioners in health and agriculture on evidence as it becomes available.
