Forest genetic resources training guide

This set of training materials makes Forest Genetic Resources (FGR) training relevant, attractive and accessible to non-specialists. It will enable teachers and trainers to cover FGR issues in their courses, and increase understanding of how to manage diverse and complex forest and other tree based ecosystems sustainably.

Who is it for?

  • Lecturers and students in tertiary education programmes on forestry, agriculture, environmental studies, and broader land management programmes. Primarily it targets general forestry practitioners, rather than forest genetics specialists. However the materials could also be used as part of the training of tree breeders/geneticists.
  • Trainers and trainees in short courses (on-the-job training) on forest biodiversity and forest genetic resources
  • Forestry practitioners: forest/land-use managers, certification organizations, NGOs, e.g. those involved in forest restoration.

Approach and structure

The guide has a global geographic scope and covers issues of global and local relevance with regard to conservation and sustainable use of FGR. It includes 5 'problem-based' teaching modules. Case studies will help learners to ask relevant questions related to genetic issues in various forest/tree management situations. The training guide covers practical issues that practitioners confront in real-life, introduces students to basic genetic concepts and shows their relevance and application to these real issues. Organized in a modular format, the guide provides case studies, teacher notes, audiovisuals that are flexible and easy to use in a range of formal or informal training and learning situations. Thus, the trainer can select topics and case studies that are of particular interest and relevance to their students.
