Forests, Trees and Agroforestry

CRP6 Forests Trees and AgroforestryThe CGIAR Research Programme on Forests, Trees and Agroforestry (CRP 6) aims to enhance the management and use of forests, agroforestry and tree genetic resources across the landscape, from farms to forests.

Forests are a vital resource. Of the 1.4 billion people who live in extreme poverty, around 90% depend on forests for some part of their livelihoods. Forests provide jobs and incomes and natural resources. They are also the source of conflicts and challenges, as different parties seek to use them in different ways.

CRP 6 is led by the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), with Bioversity International, the World Agroforestry Centre and the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) as key CGIAR partners.

With outside partners, we aim to undertake practical, action-oriented research at several scales, from smallholder production systems to global trade in forest products, in order to ensure that forests can play their part in sustainable development. Bioversity is leading Component 2 of the CRP, on the management and conservation of forest and tree resources. This focuses on the needs of forest managers, including local people, with an emphasis on improved technical and governance approaches to conserving forest ecosystems and the genetic resources they contain.

The four research themes link management, conservation and sustainable use of forest and tree resources.

Key research themes:

  1. Understanding threats to important tree species and formulating genetic conservation strategies
  2. Conserving and characterising high-quality germplasm of important tree crops and their wild relatives
  3. Developing improved silvicultural, monitoring and management practices for multiple use.
  4. Developing tools and methods to resolve conflicts over distribution of benefits and resource rights.

Bioversity is also contributing to other Components of the CRP, for example through work on tracking illegal timber, and there are close links with the CRP on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security. Work will concentrate on priority regions and countries characterised by poverty and high biological diversity in forests, with high levels of threats to these habitats. In these countries there is a strong need for improved forest and tree resource management because poor people there depend on forests for their livelihoods. Several activities, for example work with the Convention on Biological Diversity, will nevertheless be of global relevance.
