- EA-PGR

The Regional Network for Conservation and Utilization of Plant Genetic Resources in East Asia (EA-PGR) was established in 1991. The members of EA-PGR include China, Japan, Republic of Korea, Democratic People's Republic of Korea and Mongolia.

Background

EA-PGR was established during the 1991 International Board for Plant Genetic Resources (IBPGR) Workshop on Underutilized Crop Genetic Resources of East Asia, held in Beijing, China. The framework of the network was formulated at its second meeting held in the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Beijing, China on 23-25 September 1994.

Bioversity International' Office for East Asia services as the Interim Secretariat of the network and maintains close contacts with the national coordinators identified by member countries. The Secretariat organized the network meeting every three years for reviewing progress, identifying new opportunities and developing the work plan for joint activities.

Goals, objectives and focus areas

The network's goals are to improve conservation and use of the region's plant genetic resources through information exchange and collaborative activities that are of common interest to member countries.

Its specific objectives are to:

  • promote documentation and information management in the region,
  • promote germplasm and information sharing among member countries,
  • strengthen the national programmes by providing advice and training opportunities on managing plant genetic resources,
  • coordinate research activities and avoid duplication of efforts in the region,
  • implement a cooperative programme with common interests and
  • improve conservation and use of plant genetic resources in the region.

The network's major focus areas are on:

  • developing a shared information network system;
  • assessing current status and identifying problems and constraints for each country and providing assistance in improving the national programmes;
  • developing cooperative project proposals on plant genetic resources collecting, characterization and evaluation in the region;
  • improving safe conservation by complementary approaches, such as on-farm conservation and in situ conservation; and
  • organizing training on manpower for plant genetic resources research.
