Eldad is a Senior Scientist responsible for the development, coordination and execution of regional research agenda on banana in Banana Research Network for Eastern and Southern Africa (BARNESA) countries.
His current research focus is on the development of integrated disease management strategies for banana xanthomonas wilt (BXW), Black leaf streak, fusarium wilt, weevils and nematodes, including improving current epidemiological knowledge, host plant-pathogen-vector interactions and the role of endophytes in regulating disease development and incidence.
Eldad also works on developing and testing diagnostic and surveillance tools; the development of banana genotypes resistant to Black sigatoka, weevils and nematodes through genetic engineering and conventional breeding; and the development and coordination of the regional framework for banana disease management for east and central Africa.
Eldad's previous experiences include:
- Principal Research Officer, NARO-Uganda; 1992-5 in charge of banana and coffee pests and disease; coordination of BARNESA
- Director of Research, NARO-Uganda (1995-7) over all coordination of crops research and development in the humid agroecological zones, including facilitating the development and setting of research agenda
- Scientist and regional coordinator, INIBAP 1997-2002 responsible for the coordination of BARNESA; regional research agenda setting
- Senior scientist/regional coordinator 2003- to date. Facilitating the development, coordination and execution of regional banana research agenda in BARNESA countries.
