Message - Prof Hao Xiaojiang

Distinguished guests,
Esteemed participants,
Ladies and Gentlemen,

It gives me great pleasure to participate in the opening ceremony of this workshop. Before anything else, allow me, on behalf of Kunming Institute of Botany, to express a warm welcome to all participants from both home and abroad. Also, I wish to thank Professor A.N. Rao and Professor Pei Shengji for their concerted efforts in organizing this workshop. I am especially grateful to the International Plant Genetic Resources Institute (IPGRI) and the International Network for Bamboo and Rattan (INBAR) to have provided funding for this workshop.

Kunming Institute of Botany is a multidisciplinary institution of Chinese Academy of Sciences, and there are about 300 staff members working in five divisions. These are: the Department of Plant Taxonomy and Phytogeography, which includes China's second largest herbarium; Department of Photochemistry, Department of Biotechnology, Depart of Ethnobotany and Botanical Garden. During the past decades, our researchers, both of old and young generations, have done a lot of extensive botanical surveys and studies in Southwest China, the research results involved have attracted the attention of many in the world. At present, the institute is focussing on all relevant aspects of plant diversity conservation and sustainable use of resources by means of interdisciplinary and trans-sectoral approaches. The institute would welcome any kind of cooperation and exchanges with you, distinguished guests.

Bamboo is one of the most useful plants in the world. For a long time it has been of importance in my institute's study fields. This morning my colleagues, Dr Li De-zhu will present his recent findings on systematic study of bamboo in China, and Mr Wang Kanglin will give you an interesting introduction to bamboo ecology. In the days to come you will have an opportunity to find a number of bamboo species and some traditional management and uses of bamboo resources by indigenous people in Xishuangbanna. Hopefully, you will have an interesting and pleasant journey. Meanwhile, please kindly benefit us with your valuable suggestions, recommendations, opinions, and advice concerning my institute's research fields, discipline orientation, and administrative work. I wish you good health, and comfortable stay in both Kunming and Xishuangbanna.

Finally, I am happy to announce that my institute is organizing an international symposium on biodiversity conservation and sustainable use of plant resources, which will be held on the 6th-8th of December this year. The initiative of this symposium is to celebrate the sixtieth anniversary of the Kunming Institute of Botany but additionally, we hope to provide a forum for experts with common interests to exchange and discuss the related topics. Therefore, all of you are invited to participate at that time. And I am looking forward to seeing you in Kunming again.

Thank you.

Professor Hao Xiaojiang
